Attraction of the Month:
Whitehaven Ferry
Explore Wicomico County via the Whitehaven Ferry, which has been in
operation for more than 300 years. Dating back to as early as 1692, the
Whitehaven Ferry is said to be one of the longest continuously operated
ferries in the country. Today, the ferry provides up to three cars at a
time access from the historic town of Whitehaven to Somerset County.
Established in 1708, Whitehaven Village was once a busy maritime town
frequented by salesmen who traveled to and from Annapolis and Baltimore.
At that time it boasted shipyards, a roller rink, bowling alley, soda
parlor and dance hall. It is said that Whitehaven Village is where Edna
Ferber, inspired by the stories of the salesmen who traveled the Wicomico
River, wrote "Show Boat."
Today, however, Whitehaven is a unique, tightly-knit village of just fifty
people. The town's historic Whitehaven Hotel serves as a reminder of the
town's long history, and as a quaint bed and breakfast for those looking
to get away from it all.
