Presidents Message

This is a good time to look at our calendars and save some dates for this year. We will be having our very first Eastern Shore Regional Poker Classic on February 16 & 17 at the Wicomico Civic Center. We expect over 300 seats to be sold for this event. The Wicomico Youth and Civic Center has a great lineup this year so far with B.B. King, Larry the Cable Guy, Trace Adkins, The Harlem Globetrotters and "The Sound of Philadelphia" to name a few. Please check the Civic Center website, www.WicomicoCivicCenter.org, for these dates. Tourism related events also lie ahead. The fourth annual Pork in the Park Barbeque Festival will be held April 20-22, 2007 and the Poodle Club of America Specialty Breed Show will take place at the Wicomico Civic Center June 10-15, 2007. What's more, the CVA board is working on our very own event. We hope to finalize the date and details in the coming months and will need your help to make it a success.

I would like to take this time to thank all of you for joining the CVA and contributing to our mission. I would also like to thank the tourism department for all the hard work they do. I am impressed with the amount of work that the sales and marketing department does for our group. They have worked very hard on our new branding program which we will see in the coming months. Together we can make Wicomico County the only destination on the Eastern Shore.

Thank you in advance for helping to make 2007 a very exciting year for the CVA and Wicomico County Tourism.

Mary M. Seemann

Sports Marketing Update

The 17th Annual Salisbury Lion’s Club Holiday Basketball Classic wrapped up Saturday evening at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center. The annual event attracted thousands of spectators during the four-day event, and featured high school basketball teams from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

For the first time ever, teams competed for bracket championships.  This changed added an extra level of competition to the event with Good Counsel High School, Nansemond River, Forest Park, North Caroline, Frederick Douglass, James M. Bennett each taking home their respective cup's title.

Coaches and players alike were impressed with the Basketball Classic and have already made verbal commitments to return next year. This is welcomed news as the Salisbury Lions Club and the tourism department continue joint efforts to grow the tournament into a nationally recognized event.

A special thanks goes out to more than 100 businesses who helped sponsor the event and make the annual tradition possible. Each of the local teams that participated will receive $1500 to help support their athletic department, while each of the traveling teams will receive $2000 to help support their athletic department and to help cover traveling expenses

Plans are already in the works for the 18th annual event. Please contact Andy Wisk at 410-548-4914 if you are interested in becoming a sponsor or program advertiser of this event.
