Wildlife, Water and Whitehaven

Get Outside: Wildlife, Water + Whitehaven on the Virginia/Maryland Eastern Shore

Highlights include:

Traveling from Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel:

Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge Trek: We’ll transfer buses to be transported up a seven-mile service road to view wildlife. Horses, white-tailed deer, sika deer, a variety of birds and other wild refuge residents await on this road less traveled. Please dress for the weather, as riders will be allowed to get off the bus at select locations. Insect repellent, water, cameras and binoculars are recommended. We will then stop for a restroom break at the Worcester County Welcome Center.

Delmarva Discovery Museum: Explore the unique world between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean at the Delmarva Discovery Museum. Learn how the lives of the people on Delmarva were shaped by the water and land, and how the people, in turn, have shaped the environment. A visit isn’t complete without saying hello to North American river otters Mac and Tuck in their 6,000-gallon aquarium and land area.

Lunch at The Red Roost Crabhouse & Restaurant or Boonies Burgers, Beer & Bait: Enjoy lunch on Wicomico County’s Westside at The Red Roost Crabhouse & Restaurant or Boonies Burgers, Beer & Bait, which both offer outdoor dining options.

Village of Whitehaven Walking Tour: Explore the 1685 Eastern Shore village of Whitehaven. This quaint village was once a busy port, spanning both sides of the Wicomico River. A tour guide will showcase the 1886 two-room schoolhouse that serves as a museum and community meeting site, as well as the Whitehaven Church, a beautiful 1892 example of shipwrights’ skill. The tour will end at the Whitehaven Hotel.
