Great Outdoors Month: Wicomico County's outdoors by the numbers

Get outside during Great Outdoors Month. Here's a look at Wicomico County's outdoors by the numbers.

There are 1,000+ miles of waterways in Wicomico County, which means water can be found in pretty much every direction. This also means there are numerous fishing and crabbing spots — along with plenty of water access sites for those with boats, canoes, kayaks or stand-up paddleboards. In addition to the Nanticoke River, which forms the county's western border, and the Wicomico River, which courses through the county, there are countless tributaries, lakes and ponds here.

Wicomico County is home to 20,251 acres of Chesapeake Forest Lands, which provide great hunting opportunities.

Set down your towel or beach chair at one of Wicomico County's two small beaches along the Nanticoke River: Roaring Point Park and Cove Road Beach.

Want to cycle a route that includes two historic ferries? The shortest route a rider can take that includes crossing the Wicomico River on both the Whitehaven and Upper ferries is about 23.5 miles. The ferries are free to ride; just be sure to call the hotline at 410-543-2765 to ensure they are open.

Stay on the lookout: More than 300 reported bird species call the wetlands and rural areas of Wicomico County home. Read more about birding in Wicomico County in this guest blog post by Mike Walsh, president of the Tri-County Bird Club.

Visit one or more of the 50+ parks and outdoor facilities located in Wicomico County during your trip. Bring a picnic lunch or get carryout from a restaurant and enjoy it in a beautiful setting with your family. Check them out at WicomicoRecandParks.org.

Does your furry friend want to join you for a meal outdoors? Wicomico County has 15 dog-friendly restaurants listed on BringFido.com. (Note: The Country Cafe and Sonic Drive-In have closed and Panera Bread has moved.)

Want to spend the night outdoors? Wicomico County is home to three campgrounds. Roaring Point Waterfront Campground and Sandy Hill Family Camp are along the Nanticoke River, and Woodlawn Campground is in Delmar.

There are six wooded trail systems where you can hike or run a mile or further. These can be found at Pemberton Historical Park, WinterPlace Park, the Salisbury City Park, the Naylor Mill Forest Trail, the Tom Tyler Nature Trail and the Wicomico Demonstration Forest Trails.

With the addition of Field 7 1/2 in 2020, the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex is now home to nine fields. Field 7 1/2 is an inclusive, smaller-sized field built between existing fields 7 and 8. A state-of-the-art inclusive playground opened near the field this spring.
