The recently-designated Chesapeake Country All-American Road doesn't just include destinations along the way -- it is a destination.

That's what Mark Falzone, president of Scenic America, said as he discussed the All-American Road designation for a 419-mile stretch from Chesapeake City to Crisfield this month at the Bill Burton Fishing Pier State Park in Talbot County. Federal, state and local officials gathered for a ceremonial ribbon cutting.

The Chesapeake Country All-American Road goes through all nine Eastern Shore counties, including Wicomico County. Routes in Wicomico County that are included as part of this byway are Route 50, Route 54, Route 349 (Nanticoke Road), Route 352 (Whitehaven and Capitola Roads) and Route 13. “The Chesapeake Country All-American Road will give access for people to understand why we are so proud to be in the Chesapeake Bay Country,” said U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, who represents Maryland, at the ribbon cutting.

This was the first year that new All-American Roads and National Scenic Byways have been named since 2009, and Cardin was instrumental in making this bipartisan effort a reality. Read more on Scenic America's website.

Falzone spoke about how All-American Roads are the "best of the best" and must fit at least two of the following criteria and be of national significance: cultural, historic, archaeological, recreational, natural or scenic. The Chesapeake Country All-American Road fits for both cultural and recreational, he said.

Cardin said this designation is also good for national support of the Chesapeake Bay -- the largest estuary in our hemisphere of the world.

“This is a great moment for our state, one in which we’re very proud," Cardin said. "It really was Team Maryland, all of us working together.”

This is one of three All-American Roads in the state. In addition to the destination of the Chesapeake Country All-American Road, some of the attractions featured along the way in Wicomico County include the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, Pemberton Historical Park and the Whitehaven Ferry.

“This designation really provides visitors with assurance that they’re going to have a great vacation if they travel along this road,” said Liz Fitzsimmons, managing director of Maryland's Department of Commerce Office of Tourism.

We were interviewed for a WBOC story on the All-American Road. Watch that here.
