Get outside and explore the outdoors in Wicomico County. Here are some suggestions -- by land, by water and by air.
By Land
Visit one of Wicomico County’s parks. With more than 50 parks and outdoor facilities throughout Wicomico County, there are plenty of places to play, exercise and enjoy family time. Find the perfect park at WicomicoRecandParks.org.
Take a hike. The terrain in Wicomico County is mostly flat, but you can still enjoy some pretty hikes. Places to go for a hike or trail run in Wicomico County include Pemberton Park, WinterPlace Park, the Salisbury City Park, the Naylor Mill Forest Trail and the Chesapeake Forest Lands, which include the Wicomico Demonstration Forest Trails and the Tom Tyler Nature Trail. The Naylor Mill Forest Trail and Salisbury City Park mountain bike trails offer more challenging single-track paths. One resource for finding trails is DelmarvaTrailsAndWaterways.com.
Go hunting. With more than 20,000 acres of Chesapeake Forest Lands, Wicomico County is an ideal place for hunting animals such as deer and ducks. For more information on hunting and fishing, visit FishAndHuntMaryland.com.
Go camping. Wicomico County is home to three campgrounds – Roaring Point Waterfront Campground and Sandy Hill Family Camp, which are along the Nanticoke River on the County’s Westside – and Woodlawn Campground in Delmar.
See unique plants. Salisbury University’s campus is home to the Salisbury University Arboretum. Visit the campus and see a variety of interesting plants. Learn more about what you can find at salisbury.edu/discover-su/arboretum or by using the Salisbury University Arboretum app.
Visit a pollinator garden. Salisbury is a Bee City USA. Celebrate bees by visiting a pollinator garden, like the one that opened at Poplar Hill Mansion in 2021.
By Water
Head out on the water. With more than 1,000 miles of waterways, there are plenty of places to get out on the water if you have a canoe, kayak or boat. Find water access sites at WicomicoRecandParks.org.
Go fishing or crabbing. It’s common to see people fishing in Wicomico County. See if you can catch a fish or a crab. Check out the water access sites mentioned above, and visit http://gisapps.dnr.state.md.us/PublicFishingAccess/index.html for a Public Angler Access map.

By Air
Go birding. With more than 300 species sighted in Wicomico County and plenty of rural areas, Wicomico County is a great place for birding. The top five hotspots listed on eBird in Wicomico County are Pemberton Park, Nanticoke River Wildlife Management Area – Nutters Neck, Cedar Hill Marina, Schumaker Pond and Ward Museum, and Ellis Bay Wildlife Management Area. Salisbury is also a Bird City Maryland community, with an official city bird of the Great Blue Heron.
Watch a sunrise or sunset. With vast open land and numerous waterfront views, there are many beautiful places in Wicomico County where people can enjoy the bright colors of sunrises and sunsets.
Play disc golf. Get in touch with the outdoors by sending a frisbee through the air at Schumaker Park’s 18-hole disc golf course. There is also a new course at the Salisbury City Park.
